Art 1: AfriCOBRA

For this project students will explore themes of the Chicago-based Africobra arts movement from the 1960’s. Students will learn about the Great Migration, the Civil Rights Movement, the Black Power movement, and how blacks were faced with unequal opportunities. We will also cover how the Africobra members faced these issues by creating a uniquely black aesthetic within the visual arts. Students will consider what it means to create artwork with positive messages and display it for a community of peers. Students will also work collaboratively with others (groups of four) to create a single unifying painting on a piece of 50”x60” mural paper. This paper will be divided into four sections; every person in each group will work on their own quadrant. Although each artist is responsible for one section of the painting, they must all work together to create one finished and cohesive project. This final painting should reflect one color scheme, free symmetry, connecting patterns, text (overall message), and imagery.
