Art 1: Political Stencils

Street art has been a way for people to get an idea across to a large group of people since the 1980’s. There are many different types of street art and different styles are used to accomplish different things. Street art is a genre that has become increasingly popular in many ways which has caused it to in many people’s opinions loose some of its power. It has seen artist such as Shepard Fairey become so popular that many question its authenticity. George Washington artists will learn about the history of street art in the fine art world and how it has changed since its inception in the 1980’s. Students will then be tasked with researching a socio-political topic that they feel strongly about and then create a stencil that addresses that issue.
