Art 1: Space and Place

The focus of this unit is to introduce students to art by means of both linear and non-linear perspectives. This project starts by students recalling an experience from his/her past. This experience will be the foundation for creating a cut-collage or “conceptual map” of this particular memory. Moments from our past are often formative, constituting who we are and what we will become. Project number two will consist of students developing a series of practice sketches in both one- and two-point perspective. Students will then create an imaginary, futuristic space by means of 3-point perspective drawing exercises. Along the way, students will learn about the history and practice of a variety of art forms; learn and apply new media techniques and processes to plan and create work; master technical aspects of creating perspective drawings/collages; and become active participants in a multitude of ways of thinking about, creating, discussing, and critiquing art.
