Art 2: Found Object Sculpture

In this unit students are first asked to bring in a small bag filled with disposable items from their houses. We then take all of the objects as divide them as a class evenly into piles. Students are then randomly assigned a pile with a partner.

Once the materials have been divided up students are only given two guidelines / rules for the project: you must use everything in your pile, and what you make must be non-representational.

The non-representational aspect is often the most difficult for students. They are accustomed to a "good" art project looking like "what it's supposed to". By working with few constraints and with random materials students are forced to tap into their creativity and not just technical skills to create a sucessful piece.
