Art 1: Ink'd String

George Washington students started the year off by exploring the ideas and techniques used by Surrealist artists. The unit will begin with an overview of the creation of the Surrealist movement and how it was heavily influenced by the horrors of World War One. George Washington students will then engage in Surrealist activities such as "the exquisite corpse", "automatic writing", and a collaborative "poem of opposites". The end of the unit will focus on the Surrealist technique / concept of "seeing into" in which students will use the Surrealist "paranoiac critical method" to create several pieces of artwork.
